Northern Territory Police have charged two French backpackers with possessing cannabis and shoplifting after they allegedly ate their way around a Darwin supermarket.

Security apprehended the pair when they left without paying for sandwiches, chocolates and drinks, as well as a bag filled with glitter and party poppers.

Watch Commander Louise Jorgensen says the backpackers had a trafficable amount of cannabis with them.

"They were apprehended by store security and one of the men emptied his pockets in the back room, and he was found to be carrying 41 clip-seals [bags] of cannabis," she said.
