The result of the federal election vote in the northern Victoria seat of is expected to be known by the end of the day, but that may not be the end of the matter.

Counting is continuing in the hotly-contested seat, with Independent Cathy McGowan ahead of the Liberal incumbent, Sophie Mirabella by several hundred votes.

Steve Kennedy, from the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), says if the difference in the final count is less than 100 votes, there will be a recount.

"Outside of that, candidates have to request the recount and give pretty good reasons," he said.

"Just being close by several hundred votes is not reason in itself.

"Then that gets considered by the AEC."

Meanwhile, it will be some time before the final outcome is confirmed in the seat of , the electorate next door to Indi.

The outcome there has been very close in three of the last four elections.

The Labor incumbent Rob Mitchell is in front of his Liberal opponent, Donna Petrovich.
