Western Australia's former trade commissioner to Indonesia Ross Taylor is urging the Federal Coalition to seize on any opportunity to strengthen its agriculture ties with Indonesia.

Mr Taylor's call is in response to comments made this week by Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce, who was critical of an Indonesian Government plan to buy over one million hectares of Australian land for cattle production.

Mr Taylor is also the head of the WA-based Indonesia Institute.

He says the Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott, should see the prospect as a chance to boost Australian trade and build other industries.

"The issue is that Australia and Indonesia in terms of agriculture can do some amazing things together right across the board, not just beef or even horticulture, but again these opportunities are simply overlooked," he said.

Mr Abbott plans to meet Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono next month.
