PEOPLE STRANDED FOR TWO DAYS BY THE FLOODWATERS IN COLORADO FINALLY GETTING A LIFT TO SAFETY.

AIDED BY A BREAK IN THE WEATHER, NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS BEGAN EVACUATING 295 RESIDENTS FROM JAMESTOWN, COLORADO.

SOUNDBITE (English) Cooper Didier, Evacuee from Jamestown area: "It's bad. Our house is gone, the road is gone, you could tell from the helicopter."

THE REMOTE MOUNTAIN TOWN HAS BEEN WITHOUT POWER OR WATER FOR OVER A DAY.

OFFICIALS WARNED THAT UTILITIES COULD BE DISRUPTED FOR WEEKS.

SOUNDBITE (English) Dean Hollenbaugh, evacuee from Jamestown area: "Water is still rolling down that hillside there where the road goes out. The main street in Jamestown is now a river. The creek is going right down the middle of the street."

THE ONSLAUGHT OF HEAVY RAINFALL HAS TURNED TOWNS INTO MUDDY SWAMPS, FORCING MANY TO SEEK EMERGENCY SHELTER AND COMPLICATING RESCUE EFFORTS.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sheriff Joe Pelle, Boulder County: "Given the nature of the roadways and the extensive damage to the roadways, we are going to be heavily dependent on air operations for quite awhile. The roadways aren't simply blocked by mudslides or rockslides or debris. The roadways are in many many places completely gone."

FORECASTS SAY RAIN IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEKEND.
