The State Opposition has called for transparency as Frankston MP Geoff Shaw, prepares to face the Victorian Parliament Privileges Committee today.

Mr Shaw is being investigated by police and the committee over allegations his misused his taxpayer-funded car.

Labor's Scrutiny of Government spokesman Martin Pakula wants the hearing to be made public.

"You've got members of the cabinet who are effectively the government members on that committee and they depend on the member for Frankston for their jobs, and they're the ones deciding his fate," he said.

"I think in those circumstances if the public's to have any confidence in the privileges committee process, it should be an open process."
