A 27-year-old man is on trial in the District Court accused of biting off the tip of another man's tongue.

William Donald Guthrie is facing a charge of causing grievous bodily harm to the man during a drunken fight at a house in Butler in November last year.

The court was told the victim has no memory of what happened but medical evidence suggests his injury, in particular its shape, has the characteristics of a human bite.

Mr Guthrie denies the charge.

His lawyer told the court his client does not believe he was responsible for the man's injury, but if he was, his actions were not deliberate and could have been an accident.

The trial is expected to end later this week.
