The Premier Denis Napthine says the Federal Coalition win will help to secure the development of the East West Link.

The Federal Coalition has pledged $1.5 billion to the $8b project.

The proposed road will connect CityLink with the Eastern Freeway.

Dr Napthine says swings against Labor in the eastern suburbs are indicative of support there for the project.

"I think the vote in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne is a clear vote in favour of the East West Link," he said.

"You're looking at very big swings towards the Coalition in key seats that are affected by the East West Link, like Jagajaga , Menzies and La Trobe (as well as) Aston and the Coalition won the seat of Deakin.

"This nation building piece of infrastructure has been strongly supported by Tony Abbott and his candidates in these seats.

"I look forward to working with Tony Abbott as Prime Minister and his team to grow jobs and opportunities in this State and to get on with building key infrastructure like the East-West link.

But Victorian Greens Leader Greg Barber says the Government is misinterpreting the election results.

"We know from other polling that most people prefer rail as a solution to unclog our city over the tunnel," he said.

"The tunnel is hugely expensive, and people in inner-Melbourne have made their voice very clear as to which party they support, the Greens, the party who stood up strongest against the tunnel.

"Of course there are swings against Labor all over the country.

"It's got nothing to do with Denis' favourite project."

Dr Napthine says the Coalition win shows how out of touch the State Labor leader Daniel Andrews and is party are on the project.

"This election result sends a strong and clear message to state Labor to stop opposing the project, to stop playing politics and to support the crucial East West Link."
