Liz Cambage is on her way back to Australia, with the Tulsa Shock centre ruled out for the remainder of the WNBA season with an ankle injury.

Cambage sprained her ankle during the Shock's 90-88 loss to Los Angeles on August 25 and has not played since.

The team says the Australian Opals centre's injury has not healed as quickly as expected and she will be "out for the rest of the season with ankle sprain".

"Cambage will be returning home today for rehab on her ankle," the Shock tweeted on Wednesday.

"A key factor to our team's success this season, Liz's energy, enthusiasm & overall presence will be greatly missed!"

Cambage said it was "bitter sweet" to be coming home but she was grateful for all the messages of support.

"Thanks for all the well wishes, sad to be leaving my shock family today," she posted on Twitter.

The Shock have won just 10 from 30 games this season and currently sit last in WNBA's Western Conference with four games remaining.
