John Howard has confirmed what many already suspected - politicians do take notice of opinion polls after all.

The former prime minister was responding to a question put to him on Tuesday by a student at St George's College in the Labor-held federal seat of Adelaide.

Asked who he thought would win Saturday's election, Mr Howard replied Tony Abbott and referred to the opinion polls indicating such an outcome.

"All the politicians say `we don't take any notice of the polls'," he said.

"I will let you into a secret: we do.

"We take a lot of notice of the polls."

He said all the polls suggested Mr Abbott would win, "but you can't be certain".

"I have been through elections when things have changed rather dramatically in the last week, although I don't think they are going to change too dramatically in the last week (this time)."

Mr Howard was in Adelaide on the campaign trail with local Liberal candidates.
