Australia's voters may never had so much personal contact with political candidates.

Labor MPs and candidates have been hitting the phones, exceeding one million calls overnight.

That's 10 times as many as were made in the 2010 campaign.

Labor campaign spokeswoman Penny Wong says it's working.

"Tony Abbott might have the front pages of the Telegraph, but we've got real people speaking to real people," she said in a statement.

"Nothing beats communicating with Australians directly, so we've ramped up our calls and we're out knocking on doors and building our presence online."

Senator Wong says the party's callers are getting very strong feedback that Australians are worried about cuts if Tony Abbott is elected on Saturday.

"They've seen what Campbell Newman did in Queensland and they know that Tony Abbott would be even worse," she said.

Labor's phone champs include South Australian MP Steve Georganas, with 3,700 calls to constituents in three months, and Laura Fraser-Hardy, candidate for the Queensland seat of Bonner, with 500 calls in the last week.

It's not just phone calls.

Labor is also using the campaign perennial, the voter mailout, which includes letters from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to 20 electorates, talking about the $2,300 hit they will cop under an Abbott government.
