The Tasmanian Government is hoping to get more bang for its tourism buck with a new foray into the world of social media.

Tourism Minister Scott Bacon says a cheap new online campaign could reach millions during the next week.

The Government has shouted nine tourists on a trip around Tasmania, at a cost of $40,000.

The visitors have millions of online followers between them and will show off the state to the world using the internet photo sharing platform Instagram.

Lauren Bath is among the visiting photographers.

"I'll probably take about 3-4,000 on the trip, and I'd say other photographers will be the same or even more, posting around five a day over eight days, 40 images, that will go on Instagram per person."

Tasmania's tourism budget's taken a hit in recent years as the State Government's struggled to rein in successive deficits.

The Minister says social media is more than just cost-effective.

"We are continuing to spend more in social media," Mr Bacon said.

"It's not only a cost effective way to spend taxpayers' money, but it's also we think a very effective way to get the word out there about Tasmania and extend the reach of our traditional media."

The visitors will spend eight days travelling the state.
