Police in Launceston expect to make further arrests after seizing nine stolen firearms in raids yesterday.

Detectives searched houses at Newnham, Mowbray and Rocherlea, recovering guns that were stolen from a house in Youngtown this week and others taken last year from homes in Holwell, Glenorchy and Mayfield.

A 28-year-old Newnham man has been charged with possessing stolen property and drug matters and a 37-year-old man is facing firearms offences.

Detective Inspector Scott Flude says the seizures were the result of tip-offs from the public.

"Part of the reason for these searches is from information we've received from the public," he said.

"In the past as you know I've criticised people who have not been forthcoming in relation to firearm incidents, but just lately people are coming to speak to us, which is great."
