The ACT Supreme Court has sentenced a Duntroon Army cadet to five years jail for sexually assaulting the wife of a colleague.

Paul Edward Buckley, 24, was found guilty of three charges in July.

In April 2012 Buckley had been at an official celebratory dinner at the college with fellow cadets including the victim's husband, and was heavily intoxicated.

At one point the man had told Buckley that he would be separating from his wife and would sleep in his college room that night.

Buckley had made an offensive remark and later went to the couple's home where he knew the woman would be alone.

Buckley entered the home, wandering from room to room in the dark until he found the woman asleep on the couch.

The victim says she did not realise Buckley was not her husband until he spoke.

When she did see who was there, she chased Buckley from the house and called for help.

Buckley was arrested the next morning.

He maintained he was so drunk he had not remember the incident.

Buckley will be eligible for parole in January 2016.
