A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to seven years detention for a sex attack against an elderly woman in the Great Southern region.

The teenager had already pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault and attempted aggravated sexual penetration.

The boy broke into the 88-year-old victim's home in April and repeatedly kicked and punched her, before partially stripping her clothes off.

The victim was wearing a Silver Chain personal alarm which was activated during the assault.

As a result, the woman's family rushed to her home to find her on the floor with the offender standing above her.

Perth Children's Court President Justice Denis Reynolds told the court the victim's age made the crimes absolutely appalling.

The sentence will be backdated to April to reflect time the teenager has already spent in custody.
