Gold company Doray Minerals says it has achieved success at its project near Meekatharra, despite criticism of its small resource base.

Doray Minerals was created as a result of a deal struck at Kalgoorlie-Boulder's Diggers and Dealers conference four years ago.

Yesterday, the company announced the pouring of the first gold at its Andy Well project, the resource grade averages about six grams per tonne.

Doray Managing Director, Allan Kelly says there's previously been an emphasis on building larger resource bases, regardless of the grade of ore and the company was initially criticised for having a small resource base.

"Companies were being valued by how many ounces they had on their book rather than whether that would actually translate into a reserve," he said.

Today is the last day of the annual Diggers and Dealers conference.
