Doctors' group rates airports on healthy food

DALLAS (AP) — Travelers looking for a healthy meal on the go stand a better chance in Newark, N.J., than at other airports.

That's the conclusion of a physicians' group, which ranked Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport last.

The report looked at the percentage of restaurants at an airport that offered at least one vegetarian meal that was low in fat, high in fiber and contained no cholesterol.

The report was issued Monday by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the same folks who recently handed out report cards on school lunches and scolded a Las Vegas restaurant called the Heart Attack Grill after a stricken diner was hospitalized.

The group gave Newark Liberty International Airport a 92 percent score after finding a healthy menu offering at 56 of the 61 eateries there, although it's unclear how many diners can follow the doctors' advice, because Newark also has one of the worst on-time arrival ratings in the country.

Newark was followed by Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

Atlanta was at the end of the list, with just 58 percent of its restaurants offering something that the doctors' group considered healthy. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Los Angeles International Airport were also near the bottom.
