VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

THREE PEOPLE ARE DEAD IN EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA, AFTER A SHOOTING AT A MUNICIPAL BUILDING.

STATE POLICE SAY A MAN IDENTIFIED AS 59-YEAR-OLD ROCKNE NEWELL ATTACKED A TOWN MEETING ON MONDAY EVENING, ABOUT 85 MILES NORTH OF PHILADELPHIA.

SOUNDBITE (English) Captain Edward Hoke, Commanding Officer, Pennsylvania State Police:

"Upon the approach to the township building, he began to fire the longgun into the township building, through the windows of the building. He continued to advance on the building, firing as he walked forward, firing through the windows. "

AUTHORITIES SAY BETWEEN 15 AND 18 PEOPLE WERE ATTENDING A MEETING.

THEY SAY NEWELL ENTERED THE BUILDING, FIRED HIS WEAPON, AND THEN EXITED AND RETURNED TO HIS CAR, COMING BACK WITH A HANDGUN.

'He then reapproached the building and entered the building, again firing the weapon and was subsequently tackled and brought to the ground by two individuals who were inside the township building.'

NEWELL WAS TREATED AT A HOSPITAL AND IS IN POLICE CUSTODY.

AUTHORITIES SAY HE HAS HAD A LONG-RUNNING DISPUTE WITH TOWNSHIP OFFICIALS OVER THE POSSIBLE CONDEMNATION OF HIS UNKEMPT PROPERTY.
