"Unleashed" (Minotaur), by David Rosenfelt

In "Unleashed," David Rosenfelt's latest mystery featuring lawyer Andy Carpenter, a U. S. drone kills a man in Pakistan, but the man has already launched a well-organized plot to punish his killers.

Carpenter, a criminal defense attorney in New Jersey, stumbles on the plot when he agrees to defend Denise Price for the murder of her husband, Barry, who died in an airplane crash. Carpenter, who would rather spend his time rescuing homeless dogs than defending human clients, has taken the case as a favor to his accountant, a friend of the Prices.

Usually Carpenter has no trouble mounting a brilliant defense, but this time, he can't even put together a list of witnesses. When the judge asks why, Carpenter replies: "I'm sorry, your honor, but my witnesses keep getting murdered."

What's going on? What will happen if the terrorist plot isn't exposed and stopped? Why did Barry die? Rosenfelt keeps readers guessing to the very end.

In this installment of the series, the author puts more emphasis on suspense than on humor, so Carpenter fans won't find his usual courtroom theatrics and laugh-out-loud hilarity. Still, they will have a good time trying to solve a well-constructed puzzle.
