Top medical specialists from hospitals across Australia have taken a break from their regular jobs to help out in a joint military exercise in central Queensland.

About 28,000 Australian and US military are involved in the Talisman Sabre exercise at Shoalwater Bay near Rockhampton.

The medical specialists are working at a field hospital set up with dozens of interlocking tents.

Major Paul Mitchell says the hospital is similar in size to the facility at Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan and has more specialists than Rockhampton Hospital.

"We're very fortunate that we do have a number of general surgeons and their specialties at the moment," he said.

"[This] provides us with a greater capability than they have at Rocky Base Hospital.

"Three resuscitation bays, we've got two operating theatres, we can conducted general trauma surgery, we've also got orthopaedic capability as well.

"We've very fortunate that we've got a four-bed intensive care department, with a highly qualified and skilled intensivist that's made himself available for this particular exercise."

Exercise Talisman Sabre began on July 15 and ends on August 5.
