It has been a bumper tourist season in Birdsville in Queensland's far south-west.

Birdsville Hotel assistant manager Steve Kinney says visitor numbers have been up since before the June school holidays.

He says there is no sign of a drop off any time soon.

"It was a bit slow during April, May but since then it's just gone ballistic," he said.

"Tourist numbers are very good ... motel figures are up, the bar is marginally up, and there's certainly a lot of people around, so it's great to see."

He says the hotel is catering for up to 300 diners a night.

"A lot of people are going across the desert, both ways, and a lot of people are just doing the loop around Innamincka.

"Some are going up the coast and across to Mount Isa and back down through Boulia and Bedourie.

"People are coming up the track from Adelaide and heading across to Longreach and I hear Longreach's figures are good as well."
