Tabloid journalists are already camped outside St Mary's Hospital in London, waiting for the birth of the 'Royal Baby', as Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge prepare to become first time parents.

The Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton has become one of the most watched style icons of the modern day.

So, when 16 year old Sophie Aylward was looking for a muse for her entry in the 2013 Wool4Skools design competition, she says the Duchess, 'our Kate' was an immediate and obvious choice for her.

Sophie's brief was to create a formal piece of clothing for a member of the modern Royal Family; in her case - the Duchess of Cambridge, using wool.

She researched her subject to find out what colours and cuts would suit the Duchess and then went about the business of designing a piece of clothing that pulled all the elements of the brief together.

And, according to designer and judge of the competition Jonathon Ward, Sophie's entry was exceptionally good.

"All of the entries this year were excellent; the students had put such a lot of research into their entries and it showed.

"Sophie's designs were beautiful, beautifully thought out and very well executed.

"In fact, with four separate treatments, it was actually like a small collection."

Marius Cumming says AWI put the competition together at the behest of woolgrowers who always want to see their fibre placed front and centre in the school curriculum.

"The first year, the competition was to re-design your school uniform, last year it was a 'vision for modern Australia'; this year the brief is to design a formal piece of clothing for a member of the Royal family."

As Marius concedes, with a royal birth expected as the winners are announced, the timing is perfect.
