OZ Minerals has confirmed a loss of 61 jobs at its Prominent Hill mine site in the far north of South Australia.

The company said operating costs were under review, including contracts for supplies and services.

It previously said boosting its Indigenous workforce was a focus, but 10 of the jobs to go were Indigenous employees.

OZ Minerals still has about 160 Aboriginal workers at the copper and gold mine.

Former Indigenous liaison officer at Prominent Hill, David Hunter, was one of those who lost his job, three weeks ago.

He said those out of work might struggle to find new employment.

"At the moment I don't think there's a lot going on because there's quite a few down at Roxby or Olympic Dam have been put off," he said.

"I've spoke to people up in the Alice and they said out at the Granites (gold mine) is getting very slow."
