CAR CURBS: China plans to increase the number of cities that restrict vehicle purchases in a bid to fight pollution and traffic congestion, state media reported Thursday. More than 13 million cars were sold in China last year.
CURRENT LIMITS: Beijing, Shanghai and two other cities already curb the purchase of vehicles for private use. Eight more may be added to the list, according to a leader of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
SIDE SWIPED: China's increasingly vocal citizens have pushed the government to be more transparent about how bad the air in their cities is. But as they get richer, their desire for cleaner air conflicts with their growing dependence on cars.
