SALVADOR, Brazil (AP) — Under-strength Italy is leading Uruguay 1-0 at halftime in the third-place match at the Confederations Cup.

Alessandro Diamanti scored in the 24th minute with a long free kick from near the right sideline.

Diamanti's shot rattled off the far post and rebounded in off the back of Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Italy defender Davide Astori had the last touch but the ball had already crossed the line.

In a fairly balanced match before an enthusiastic crowd at the Arena Fonte Nova, Edinson Cavani appeared to have equalized after finding the target with a header following a free kick from Diego Forlan in the 32nd but he was offside.

Italy was without usual starters Mario Balotelli, Andrea Pirlo and several others.
