Adelaide ordered evergreen backman Brent Reilly to lose weight after dropping him from their AFL side.

The 29-year-old shed a few kilograms after concern from coaches.

Reilly was dumped from Adelaide's side which lost to Richmond a fortnight ago, but has been recalled for Saturday's away fixture against Gold Coast.

"What we have seen with Brent's training and his attitude has been a fair bit more upbeat," Crows assistant coach Scott Camporeale told reporters on Friday.

"Sometimes you just need a circuit breaker.

"He is too good a player not to be playing AFL footy so we're going to back him in and give him another shot."

Reilly last year was chosen in the initial All Australian squad but didn't make the final team. Yet his form, like Adelaide's, has wavered this year with the Crows struggling in 11th spot on the ladder.

"The game is getting quicker and faster and guys need to cover the ground a lot easier," Camporeale said.

"And we just thought that it would be in his best interests that we needed him to just slim down a bit."
