FORTALEZA, Brazil (AP) — Spain led Nigeria 1-0 at halftime on Sunday after Jordi Alba scored in the third minute of the Confederations Cup match.

It was a wide-open half with the African champions beating the World Cup winners to most of the loose balls and often looking the more threatening.

Nigeria forward Joseph Akpala nearly scored with several chances, and Sunday Mba had another. Spain's Roberto Soldado could have had two — but for sprawling saves by Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama.

Spain's Cesc Fabregas also hit the post.

Spain needs only a draw to advance to the semifinals where it would face Italy in a rematch of the 2012 European championship final won by Spain 4-0.
