The NT government says the service for M. Yunupingu will be held at Gulkula in north-east Arnhem Land on June 30.
Yunupingu, an Aboriginal elder, educator and 1992 Australian of the Year, died aged 56 at his home in the small town of Yirrkala on June 2.
He was the first indigenous person from Arnhem Land to gain a university degree and the Northern Territory's first Aboriginal school principal when he was appointed head of Yirrkala Community School in 1990.
The NT government has asked individuals, schools and other groups wishing to attend the service to register their interest.
The Northern Land Council says the usual permits to enter Aboriginal land will not be required.
An email address (email@example.com) and a post office box (GPO box 2727 Darwin NT 0801) have been set up to take condolence messages.
