Northern Territory Police are investigating whether a man was sleeping on a road when he was hit and killed by a car at Palmerston.

Police say the man was run over on Kafcaloudes Crescent in the suburb of Moulden late last night.

Darwin Watch Commander Craig Garland says a 65-year-old taxi driver involved in the incident is in shock.

"It's actually possible that the pedestrian was sleeping on the roadway," he said.

The man who was run over was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital but died a short time later.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.

The man's death takes the Territory road toll to 15, compared to 18 at the same time last year.
