CELEBRATIONS ON THE STREETS OF TEHRAN... AS IRANIANS CHEER THE ELECTION OF THEIR NEW PRESIDENT.

HASAN ROWHANI WON BY A WIDE MARGIN - DEMONSTRATING THE STRENGTH OF OPPOSITION SENTIMENT.

THE CLERIC AND ONE-TIME NUCLEAR NEGOTIATOR WAS BACKED BY IRANIANS LOOKING FOR A MORE MODERATE LEADER... TO FOLLOW OUTGOING PRESIDENT MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD.

AHMADINEJAD, WHO SERVED FOR EIGHT YEARS, WAS NOT ALLOWED TO SEEK A THIRD TERM.

OFFICIALS SAY ROWHANI RECEIVED MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF THE VOTE, WITH HARDLINE CANDIDATES FALLING FAR BEHIND.

THE RESULT IS SEEN AS A VICTORY FOR REFORM-MINDED IRANIANS, AFTER THE LAST DISPUTED POLL TRIGGERED A GOVERNMENT CRACKDOWN.

BUT ROWHANI'S WIN IS NOT LIKELY TO LEAD TO A MAJOR SHAKEUP... WITH POWER STILL SECURELY IN THE HANDS OF IRAN'S RULING CLERICS AND THEIR REVOLUTIONARY GUARDS.
