STORYLINE:

HUNDREDS OF RIOT POLICE FIRING TEAR GAS -- RUBBER BULLETS AND WATER CANnons...

CLASHED WITH PROTESTERS IN ISTANBULS TAKSIM (tock-SIHM) SQUARE ON TUESDAY.

THE POLICE RAID CAME ON THE 12TH DAY OF NATIONWIDE PROTESTS AGAINST TURKEY'S PRIME MINISTER -- (REH'-jehp TY'-ihp UR'-doh-wahn) -- seen by MANY AS INCREASINGLY RELIGIOUS AND AUTHORITARIAN FOR THE SECULAR COUNTRY.

WHAT STARTED OUT AS PEACEFUL PROTESTS AGAINST PLANS TO REDEVELOP A PARK IN INSTANBUL -- WHERE HUNDREDS HAVE BEEN CAMPING OUT -- HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY VIOLENT.

17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Tarsu Orzyurt, protester:

"Of course people protested because nobody believes the police or the governor when they say (the) police will not interrupt, will not come into Gezi Park. They don't believe them anymore. We won't believe then anymore. We saw policemen telling us, come to the street, you don't be afraid, and then they shoot at us. So nobody believes them."

SPEAKING IN THE CAPITAL -- ERDOGAN SAID HE WAS AT THE END OF HIS PATIENCE WITH THE PROTESTERS.

(NAT SOUND)

AND HE ACCUSED THEM OF SULLYING TURKEY'S IMAGE ABROAD.

THE TURKISH HUMAN RIGHTS FOUNDATION Says FOUR people have been killed AND MANY PROTESTERS AND POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN HURT in the clashes.
