TRACK-1

A 29-YEAR-OLD INTELLIGENCE CONTRACTOR HAS REVEALED HIMSELF TO BE THE SOURCE THAT EXPOSED TWO MAJOR U-S GOVERNMENT INTELLIGENCE GATHERING PROGRAMS.

EDWARD SNOWDEN SAYS HE TOLD THE WASHINGTON POST AND BRITAIN'S GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER ABOUT THE PROGRAMS BECAUSE HE BELIEVES THE INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY IS THREATENING DEMOCRACY.

THE GUARDIAN SAYS IT PUBLISHED SNOWDEN'S IDENTITY AT HIS OWN REQUEST.

SOUNDBITE: Edward Snowden, NSA Whistleblower

'"I think the public is owed an explanation of the motivations behind the people who make these disclosures that are outside of the Democratic model.'

TRACK-2

ONE OF THE PROGRAMS SNOWDEN REVEALED INVOLVES THE GOVERNMENT SEIZING MILLIONS OF PHONE RECORDS.

THE OTHER, CALLED PRISM, HAS THE GOVERNMENT GATHERING INTELLIGENCE FROM TOP INTERNET COMPANIES LIKE MICROSOFT, FACEBOOK AND GOOGLE.

SNOWDEN SAYS THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION THE GOVERNMENT IS GATHERING IS A THREAT TO ALL AMERICANS.

SOUNDBITE: Edward Snowden, NSA Whistleblower

When you are subverting the power of the government, that is a fundamentally dangerous thing to democracy, and if you do that in secret consistently as the government does, when it wants to benefit from a secret action that it took, it kind will kind of give its officials a mandate to go hey tell the press about this thing and that thing, so the public is on our side, but they rarely if ever do that when abuse occurs.

TRACK-3

SNOWDEN IS A FORMER TECHNICAL ASSISTANT FOR THE C-I-A AND CURRENT EMPLOYEE OF CONTRACOR BOOZ ALLEN HAMILTON.

HE SPOKE TO THE GUARDIAN WHILE IN HONG KONG AND SAYS THAT REVEALING THE INTELLIGENCE GATHERING OPERATIONS HAS PUT HIS LIFE AT RISK.

SOUNDBITE: (ENGLISH) Edward Snowden / NSA Whistleblower

"I could be rendered by CIA, I could have people come after me or any of their 3rd party partners, you know they work closely with nations or you know they could pay off the triads or any of the agents or assets.

TRACK-4

BOOZ ALLEN HAMILTON CONFIRMED THAT SNOWDEN HAS WORKED FOR IT FOR THREE MONTHS, AND IS PROMISING TO WORK CLOSELY WITH INVESTIGATORS.

NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE DIRECTOR JAMES CLAPPER CALLS THE INTELLIGENCE GATHERING REVELATION RECKLESS, AND SAYS IT HAS DONE GRAVE DAMAGE.

SANDY KOZEL, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.
