A body believed to be that of a man reported missing at a remote beach in Western Australia last week has washed ashore.

The body was found at Elle's Beach, south of Coral Bay, shortly after midday today.

Police say formal identification will take a number of days but it is believed to be the body of Robert Shugg, 48, who was reported missing after going swimming on May 15.

On the same day Mr Shugg went missing, beachgoers had desperately tried to resuscitate his wife Kathreen Ricketson, 41, whose body had washed ashore while the couple's children, aged 10 and 13, watched.

However, she could not be revived.

An extensive air and sea search was called off earlier this week after failing to find any trace of Mr Shugg.

The children are being cared for by family.

The family from Canberra had been on a trip around Australia.

Post mortem examinations will be carried out to try to determine the cause of their deaths.
