Police on Queensland's Gold Coast are still searching for a man who bashed a lifeguard yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses say the lifeguard had asked the assailant's wife not to walk her dog in a flagged area on a beach at Burleigh Heads.

He was later taken to hospital with facial injuries.

Chief lifeguard Warren Young says he will receive support.

"He's going okay - obviously a bit of shock and trauma - but he's going quite well considering," he said.

"It's something unexpected that happened and he wasn't prepared for that but we'll support him and I'm sure he'll be fine."

The offender is described as Caucasian, heavily tattooed and with a solid build.
