A man who broke out of a NSW jail six weeks ago has been caught hiding in the ceiling of a Gold Coast home.

Zac Cree, 25, from Banora Point at Tweed Heads, was arrested at the home at Pacific Pines on Friday morning.

He has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and burglary, a Queensland police spokesman told AAP.

NSW police said they will apply for Cree's extradition at the earliest opportunity.

Cree was serving three years and nine months when he and two other minimum-security inmates broke out of their unit at the Glen Innes prison on April 4.

Reegan Freeburn, 24, from Grafton was caught on April 19 in a house in his home town while Ashley Cullen, 21, from Toormina is still on the run.
