BUENOS AIRES (AP) — River Plate made up ground near the top of Argentina's first division Sunday with a 2-0 victory over All Boys, while Newell's Old Boys improved to first place thanks to a 3-1 victory Saturday against Godoy Cruz.

River Plate's victory gave it in third position, three points behind the leaders, while Lanus slipped down into second - one point behind Newell's - after only managing a 0-0 draw Sunday against Independiente. There are six rounds of matches remaining in the Torneo Final, the second half of Argentina's split season.

River's city rival Boca Juniors extended its winless streak in the league to 12 matches after losing 3-0 to San Lorenzo, further increasing pressure on manager Carlos Bianchi.

In other matches Sunday, San Martin defeated Argentinos Juniors 2-1 and Quilmes won 3-0 against Colon.

River's Manuel Lanzini was gifted a goal when Rogelio Funes Mori laid off the ball for him to tap in in the 50th. Carlos Luna added the second goal deep into second half injury time from close range.

River was aided when Dario Stefanatto was shown his second yellow card and sent off for pulling down of Juan Iturbe in the 29th minute.

Ignacio Scocco scored twice to lead Newell's to its victory. The first came in the 28th when he drove a free-kick into the bottom right hand corner of the net and he finished the scoring from the penalty spot in the 71st.

Newell's second arrived courtesy of an own goal by Godoy's Jose San Roman, who unwittingly deflected the ball into his own net in the 67th.

Mauro Obolo had handed Godoy the lead in the 24th.

Lanus came out attacking against Independiente, but were forced onto the defensive when Guido Pizarro was sent off after half an hour.

Independiente's Cristian Tula was also shown a red card with 15 minutes to go, but neither team could find a winner.

Boca fielded a young side - with an important Copa Libertadores game coming up on Wednesday against Corinthians - and fell behind early when Gonzalo Veron tapped in from close range in the 18th.

Julio Buffarini increased San Lorenzo's lead from the penalty spot five minutes before halftime and Angel Correa added the third in the 54th.

In Saturday's other games Velez drew 2-2 with Arsenal and Racing defeated Tigre 2-0.

On Friday, Belgrano and Rafaela played out a 0-0 draw. Estudiantes face Union in the last game of the round Monday.
