SENDAI, Japan (AP) — Athens Olympic gold medalist Mizuki Noguchi won the Sendai international half marathon on Sunday for her first win in five years.
Noguchi, who is making a comeback from a series of injuries, won in 1 hour, 10 minutes, 36 seconds. Her last victory was at this event in 2008.
The 34-year-old Noguchi finished third at the Nagoya women's marathon in March to earn a spot on Japan's team for this summer's world championships in Moscow.
Noguchi missed the chance to defend her title in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics because of a back injury and then sat out the whole of the 2009 and 2010 seasons as a result. She failed to earn a place on Japan's team for the London Olympics after finishing sixth at the 2012 Nagoya marathon.
