Older Torres Strait Islanders with eye problems are set to benefit from a new telehealth project.

The Federal Government yesterday committed more than $20 million of funding to nine health initiatives that will use the National Broadband Network (NBN).

It includes $1.3 million for a CSIRO tele eye care service for 900 older Indigenous Australians living in the Torres Strait and rural and remote communities in Western Australia.

It will use high-speed broadband for video conferencing and medical imaging and is due to start this month.

New federal funding has also been announced for a telehealth program for older Australians, including those in the far north.

The Government has committed $2.75 million for a UniQuest-assisted care project for 650 Queenslanders living in residential aged care facilities or at home with support.

It is due to start this month.

The Government says the measures will use technology to provide cheaper, innovative aged care.
