A female prisoner tried to escape from Darwin's Berrimah Jail yesterday, authorities have said.

The woman ran in front of traffic on Tivendale Road wearing a hospital gown, with prison officers chasing her to a nearby industrial area.

Darwin Correctional Centre Acting Superintendent Rob Miller said the woman broke free from officers when she was being escorted from the medical section of the prison.

"On returning to the female section, she broke away and took off with prison officers in hot pursuit," he said.

"Police were immediately notified and, in conjunction with police and prisons, the prisoner was apprehended within half an hour."
