BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — The final decision on whether George Smith can play for Australia against the British and Irish Lions will likely be made in Japan.

The 110-test veteran retired from international rugby in 2010 but has pushed his way back into Wallaby calculations with his consistently powerful performances for the ACT Brumbies, where he is on short-term loan from Japanese club Suntory.

After the Brumbies' 19-19 draw with the Queensland Reds in the Super 15 on Saturday, the 32-year-old Smith said he wouldn't refuse a chance to return for Australia in June and July.

But, Smith says, "For anything else to happen there has to be an approach made to Suntory for me to be released."

He adds: "It is such a huge occasion playing against the Lions, but we're talking about hypotheticals."
