A GUNMAN is on the rampage at a major Boston university, with reports a police officer has been killed, according to news.com.au.
The webiste reports Massachusetts State Police say a campus policeman has been killed, CBS Boston reports.
At 10:48pm gunshots were reported were reported near campus Building 32 (Stata). The situation is said to be active and dangerous and the area has been cordoned off.
Police are swarming on the area and a statement issued by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on their emergency website has confirmed there have been multiple injuries.
MIT, located in the Boston suburb of Cambridge, is one of America's most highly regarded universities. It is within walking distance to the site where two bombs killed three people and injured 180 at the end of the city's famous marathon on Monday.
An emergency text message was sent to students warning them to keep stay away.
"There is a report of an Active Shooter in the vicinity of Building 32 Stata Center," the broadcast said. "Stay clear of the area."
Two dozen police and detectives are understood to be clustered in area south of Main St, a short distance from crime scene tape.
The university says in it's latest update: "Responding agencies continue to investigate the situation. The scene is outside of Building 32 (Stata) and 76 (Koch) near Vassar and Main Streets. Injuries have been reported. The situation is still very active and we ask everyone to stay inside."
