IT'S BEEN THE DEADLIEST DAY FOR AMERICANS IN AFGHANISTAN SINCE AUGUST.

OFFICIALS SAY A SUICIDE BOMBER DRIVING A CAR PACKED WITH EXPLOSIVES KILLED FIVE AMERICANS AND AN AFGHAN DOCTOR.

IT HAPPENED IN SOUTHERN AFGHANISTAN.

MEANWHILE, ANOTHER AMERICAN CIVILIAN WAS KILLED IN AN INSURGENT ATTACK IN THE EAST.

THE LATEST ATTACKS OCCURED JUST HOURS AFTER THE CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF ARRIVED IN THE COUNTRY. GENERAL MARTIN DEMPSEY'S VISIT IS AIMED AT ASSESSING THE LEVEL OF TRAINING AMERICAN TROOPS CAN PROVIDE TO AFGHAN FORCES ONCE INTERNATIONAL TROOPS LEAVE THE COUNTRY.
