Skeletal remains have been found in a house in outback Queensland.

Police were called to a home in Mount Isa in the state's northwest, on Monday night, after the discovery of the body.

Inspector Paul Biggin says the remains are badly decomposed and it will take some time to identify the person.

"The matter is still under investigation and the body will be referred for a post mortem," he told ABC Radio.

"If anyone's got any information on anyone who's been missing for a number of months, we'd like to hear from them.

"It's a timely reminder for everyone if you haven't (heard from) someone - particularly your neighbours - for a little while, just to make contact with them and make sure they are OK."
