BYDGOSZCZ, Poland (AP) — Japhet Kipyegon Korir of Kenya beat defending champion Imane Merga of Ethiopia to win the men's race Sunday at the IAAF cross country world championships.

Korir finished the 12-kilometer (7.2-mile) course in 32 minutes, 45 seconds in freezing winter temperatures to beat Merga by six seconds. Eritrea's Teklemariam Medhin was third in 32:54.

Earlier, Kenya's Emily Chebet clocked 24:24 seconds over 8 kilometers (4.8 miles) to regain the women's title, having also won the race in 2010. Two Ethiopians filled out the podium with Hiwot Ayalew three seconds back in second and Belaynesh Oljira third in 24:33.

Favorite Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia won the junior men's race in 21:04, also over 8 kilometers. Kenya's Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon defended her junior women's title, clocking 17:51 in the 6-kilometer (3.6 mile) race. Kenya's Agnes Jebet Tirop was given the same time in second place, and Alemitu Heroye of Ethiopia was six seconds back in third.

In the men's team event, Ethiopia took gold ahead of the United States and Kenya.
