A marathon siege on the Gold Coast is over after a man surrendered to police, but not before he started a fire in a house where he'd stockpiled gas bottles.

The man gave himself up after a 30-hour standoff that forced the evacuation of nearby residents at Upper Coomera.

He had threatened to blow up the house where he'd taken refuge with gas bottles stockpiled inside.

Police told the ABC the man started a small fire, pouring accelerant onto a mattress.

He subsequently surrendered to officers about 1am (AEST) on Friday.

He's been charged with one count of threatening violence and will face Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.

Residents have been allowed to return home.
