Simon Crean has been sacked from the Gillard government frontbench.
The sacking came in a phone call from Prime Minister Julia Gillard after Mr Crean met with her on Thursday morning to request a Labor leadership spill.
Mr Crean will be supporting Kevin Rudd in the 4.30pm (AEDT) caucus ballot and put himself forward as deputy leader of the party.
