Police allege the driver of a car involved in a fatal crash near Mareeba, west of Cairns in far north Queensland, yesterday morning was not properly licensed.

A 15-year-old girl from Machans Beach died in hospital after the four-wheel drive she was travelling in crossed onto the wrong side of the Kennedy Highway before crashing in a paddock on the Atherton Tablelands.

Seven other teenagers were on board, two of whom were flown to Townsville with life-threatening injuries.

Police say the 17-year-old driver from Bungalow was not properly licensed.

They are also investigating how the Toyota Landcruiser came to be in his possession after it was stolen from the Cairns suburb of Trinity Park on the weekend.

Officers will question the occupants once their injuries are treated.

A 14-year-old girl is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Townsville Hospital and a 15-year-old girl is in a stable condition.
