Cool response on a new date for Australia day

A Labor member in Tasmania's Upper House has distanced the State Government from a Minister's push to change the date of Australia Day.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Cassy O'Connor has written to the Prime Minister asking for the date to be changed because of sensitivities in Tasmania's Aboriginal Community.

Labor M-L-C Craig Farrell told the Upper House that's Ms O'Connor's view.

"The letter sent to the Prime Minister was only sent in the Minister's capacity as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs," he said.

"Like most correspondences from ministerial offices this did not go through cabinet.

"It reflects the position of the Minister in discharging her responsibilities as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs."
