In this photo taken Tuesday, Feb 26, 2012, participants take part in target practice at a shooting range in Krugersdorp, South Africa. In the light of the bail hearing for athlete Oscar Pistorius last week it came to light how police stumbled and fumbled through investigations. Police investigator Hilton Botha possibly contaminated the crime scene and faced attempted murder charges himself, placing even more strain on the credibility of the police. In recruiting personal the police have in a large way neglected the the quality of the personal recruited. It is in this lack of trust that guns thrive. (AP Photo/Cobus Bodenstein)

Armed man kills self in Pa. sports store bathroom
FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa. (AP) — Authorities outside Philadelphia have identified an armed man who barricaded himself inside the bathroom of a sporting goods store and killed himself.
Bucks County Coroner Joseph Campbell said Sunday that 58-year-old Mark McCarty of Levittown died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
Authorities say he entered Dick's Sporting Goods in Fairless Hills after 7 p.m. Saturday and asked to see a shotgun and ammunition. McCarty pulled out a handgun — later found to be unloaded — and ordered the worker to undo the shotgun's gun lock. He then barricaded himself inside a bathroom.
The store and nearby businesses were evacuated during the four-hour-long standoff. No one else was hurt.
Lt. Henry Ward says McCarty had also been involved in a standoff with Middletown officers in 2002.
