A 49-year-old man accused of a double murder at Atherton in far north Queensland in 1991 is due to make a bail application in the Supreme Court in Cairns this week.

Alan Leahy surrendered to police in Cairns on Friday and has been charged with murder over the deaths of his wife Julie-Anne Leahy and her best friend Vicky Arnold.

State coroner Michael Barnes recently committed Leahy to stand trial over the deaths, after overturning the findings of two previous inquests.

Leahy denies any involvement in the deaths and will make a bail application on Wednesday.
