The most extreme weather conditions are over for Lord Howe Island after a tropical cyclone was downgraded overnight.

BOM forecaster Dimitri Danchuk said the tropical cyclone had now been downgraded from a category two to category one at about 3am (AEDT) on Friday and the worst was over for residents and holidaymakers on the island.

"We had gale force winds yesterday, wind gusts 150km/h," Mr Danchuk told AAP.

"Since then winds have decreased gradually and we're expecting this tropical cyclone to be downgraded to a tropical low later in the morning.

"It has almost stopped raining."

Mr Danchuk said the cyclone came within 200km of the island on Thursday but had now moved away from the island to the southeast.
